We seek to build a new alliance with equal rights on equal terms, but we see that there is still much to do, so much to recognise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cLess than 1% of all the funding that is invested in protecting intact biodiversity and mitigating climate change in our territories reaches our communities, and that has to change. It\u2019s absurd that so much of the funding goes to consultants who are sent to tell us what we already know about how to conserve what we are already conserving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Representatives from countries across the world will vote on motions this week that will shape future global conservation policy and the allocation of finance. Coica\u2019s\u00a0<em>Amazonia po<\/em><em>r la vida<\/em>\u00a0(Amazonia for Life) campaign motion is demanding protection of 80% of the Amazon basin by 2025 (protected areas and indigenous territories make up about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.raisg.org\/en\/maps\/#!\/areas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">45% currently<\/a>) with the emphasis on indigenous peoples managing those protected areas. They are asking governments to recognise 100% of indigenous land in the Amazon and ban all forms of extractive industries in those areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/jul\/29\/record-212-land-and-environment-activists-killed-last-year\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">record number<\/a>\u00a0of environmental defenders were killed in 2019 for protecting their land, 40% of whom were from indigenous communities. \u201cScience is saying the best-conserved areas are indigenous territories \u2026 yet we have the highest level of murder,\u201d D\u00edaz Mirabal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cNational parks receive funding and support from governments but when it comes to our indigenous territories we\u2019re left to spill our own blood to defend it. Now it is time for our indigenous territories to be protected with the same level of support and legislation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">As well as showcasing a range of ideas from campaigners, scientists and conservationists, the summit provides policymakers with a chance to discuss issues in the run-up to the Cop15 \u201cParis agreement for nature\u201d, due to be negotiated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/cop\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Kunming next year<\/a>. But indigenous groups, academics and campaigners from 18 countries gathered in Marseille at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourlandournature.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cOur Land, Our Nature\u201d congress<\/a>, a \u201ccounter-summit\u201d on the eve of the IUCN meeting, called for land rights to be at the heart of conservation, not protected areas. More than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourlandournature.org\/speakers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">3,000 people attended the event<\/a>, either in person or online, which included a protest march through the French city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cThe 30&#215;30 target is a structural problem,\u201d said Mordecai Ogada, director of Conservation Solutions Afrika. \u201cWe need to rethink the definition of protected areas, those that exist, and we need to look for a more sophisticated model of biodiversity and conservation. If you want to attack climate change, you need to attack the causes that are leading to it,\u201d he said, citing western consumption and overexploitation of resources as the key drivers of ecological destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/americas\/publicaciones-audio-video\/forest-gov-by-indigenous\/en\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">UN report<\/a>\u00a0published earlier this year found indigenous people in South America were the best at looking after forests, with deforestation 50% lower than elsewhere,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/mar\/25\/indigenous-peoples-by-far-the-best-guardians-of-forests-un-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to a review<\/a>\u00a0of more than 300 studies. Representatives at the Our Land, Our Nature gathering argued that there was little scientific evidence that protecting 30% of the planet would stem biodiversity loss. The previous 10-year UN target agreed in 2010 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/strategic-plan\/2011-2020\/Aichi-Targets-EN.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Aichi, Japan, set goals that by 2020, 17%<\/a>\u00a0of terrestrial areas and 10% of coastal and marine areas would be conserved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">Lara Dominguez, a lawyer with the Minority Rights Group, said: \u201cDespite being very close to achieving the 17% target in many states, biodiversity loss has reached unprecedented levels.
